During a discussion with the children about something (can't remember now as its no longer important) I used the word 'whanau', I had used this word previously and had assumed that they understood the meaning.
During this particular discussion, I realise that in fact they didn't. We brainstormed the word and came up with ideas such as tv, far away, i don't now, food, people.
This was a turning point for me in teaching Te Reo and making sure that I explained to the kids in full the meaning of words.
This art was created because the kids kept forgetting the meaning for the word 'whanau' and this are became a visual representation. Now they are all able to remember and use the word correctly as well as explain what the koru shape means in NZ.
